Sandgropers Sign Former Australian Star Michael Veletta as Marquee Player for 2025 Spirit of Cricket T20 Tournament

The Sandgropers T20 Cricket Franchise is proud to announce the signing of former Australian international Michael Veletta as the team’s Marquee Player for the 2025 Spirit of Cricket Global T20 Tournament in Mildura.

Veletta, a dynamic right-hand batsman and wicketkeeper, brings a wealth of experience at the highest level. Between 1987 and 1990, he played 8 Test matches and 21 ODIs for Australia, alongside a stellar domestic career that included 127 first-class matches, 114 Sheffield Shield appearances, and 41 domestic one-day games for Western Australia.

His standout moment came in the 1987 World Cup Final, where he played a pivotal role in Australia’s maiden World Cup win, smashing 45 off 31 balls against England in a match remembered by cricket fans around the world.

The Sandgropers’ decision to secure a marquee player reflects their intent to build on the strong foundation laid during the inaugural tournament. The addition of Veletta is not only a boost to the team’s on-field prospects but also a nod to the franchise’s culture and values.

The leadership and professionalism Veletta brings has already inspired excitement across the club. “He was a massive influence at North Perth when I began playing at WACA level - his passion and intensity were obvious even in the way he trained. His World Cup innings is etched in history, but I think his ability to lead and set standards will be just as important for us. It’s a huge win for the Sandgropers,” said Todd Zani, Sandgropers Board Member.

Veletta’s involvement with the game has remained strong post-retirement. He has coached at both state and national levels—leading the Western Warriors and Canberra Comets—and served on the WACA Board from 2015 to 2022. He now continues to shape the future of the sport as a coach at Christ Church Grammar School.

“Joining the Sandgropers felt like a natural fit. The spirit within the group, their commitment to the community, and the bigger purpose of veterans cricket really resonated with me. Cricket has given me so much, and I’m looking forward to contributing both on and off the field,” reflected Veletta.

This year’s tournament introduces the concept of marquee player signings, a strategic move by the Spirit of Cricket to elevate the global profile of the competition and give franchises an opportunity to further build their identity.

“The inclusion of marquee players was designed to strengthen both the franchise brands and the overall reach of the Spirit of Cricket. Seeing the Sandgropers move so quickly to secure someone of Michael’s calibre underlines their intent. They’re a class outfit, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on their draft strategy,” noted Anthony Telfer, Founder & Managing Director of Spirit of Cricket Global.

The Sandgropers enter the 2025 tournament with momentum, ambition, and a marquee player who has done it all—from World Cup glory to domestic dominance. With the leadership of their Board and the addition of Veletta, the team is well-positioned for an exciting campaign ahead.
